Colour matching is part science and part experience. The science is the factory paint code, which gives a starting formula. The experience is reading how that paint has aged on your particular vehicle — sun, weather and time all shift the hue slightly — and adjusting the tint so the new paint lands in the same place as the old. Skip that step and you get a repair that's technically the 'right' colour but visibly different from every other panel on the car.

Blending is how we hide the join between new and old paint. On a single-panel repair, rather than painting just that one panel to a hard edge, the colour is feathered out across the adjacent panel and then cleared over the top. Done well, the eye can't pick where the new paint starts and the old paint finishes. Done poorly, you get a visible halo or a mismatched patch that's the first thing anyone notices when they look at the car.

The clear coat is what gives the finish its gloss and its protection. It's applied over the colour in controlled coats and then left to cure properly before any finishing work begins. Rush the cure and the finish sinks or loses gloss; give it the time it needs and you get a durable, deep shine that holds up to stone chips, UV and regular washing for years.

We use quality primers, colour coats and clear coats from reputable suppliers, because cheap materials are a false economy — they might look fine on the day and then fade, peel or lose gloss within a year. The right materials, laid down in the right order with the right flash-off and cure times between coats, are what make a refinish last. There's no shortcut around that, and we don't take one.

The process runs prep, prime, colour, clear, then finish. Each stage has to be done in sequence and each has to be right before the next begins — a problem buried under a coat of paint will always come back. That's why we block primers flat, keep the booth clean, and don't try to squeeze a multi-stage job into a single day. The timeline is built around doing it properly, not around getting it out the door.

Before handback, the finish is inspected under proper lighting for runs, dust, orange peel or mismatch, and any issues are corrected. You deal directly with the tradesperson, so if you want to know exactly what went into your refinish — which products, how many coats, what was blended — you're asking the person who did it. That's the standard a privately owned workshop holds.
